About the pattern
The bag comes with the option of a pocket on the inside of the bag, as well as making the belly into a pouch for lots of extra organization and storage.
The strap is made out of a string of leaves and two more chain-strings. This makes the strap stable, but also cute at the same time. You could also braid the strings together to make it sturdier.
There's quite a bit of sewing in this pattern, but you could probably also hot glue the nose and eyes. The inside pocket is optional and if you also don't want the belly to be a pocket you could also try attaching that with hot glue.
Disclaimer: I didn't try attaching anything with hot glue before, so I can't tell you how it will look (And remember that acrylic yarn will melt when it gets hot!)
For sewing make sure to only go through the top of the stitches from the base, to ensure a clean inside look.
Materials used
Note: You can use whatever size hook and yarn you want and everything should still turn out proportional.
I used a 3.5mm hook and size 2/3 yarn (it sadly didn´t show a weight on the label). My tension is pretty loose but I didn´t want the stitches to be too open, so I sized down my hook.
Stitches and abbreviations
-magic ring (mr)
-chain (ch)
- half double crochet (hdc)
-single crochet (sc)
-increase (inc; 2double/single crochet in one stitch)
-slip stitch (slst)
-double crochet (dc)
-treble crochet (tre)
-fasten off (FO)
Let´s start with the base of the bag.
Info: You can make the chain whatever size you want, but remember that we will increase the first round, so it will get a bit bigger. You can also make as many or as little rows to build height according to your preferences.
For reference; My prototype is 20cm in height and 36 cm in width.
The base
Ch51, hdc in 2nd chain from the hook and each ch after. Put 3 hdc in the last ch and mark the middle hdc
Then continue making hdc on the other side of the ch. Make 2 hdc in last ch and slst to first hdc of the round.
Ch1, do not turn, 3hdc into the first st. Then hdc until you reach the marker, put 3hdc into the marked stitch (mark the middle st)
Continue hdc until end of round.
If you like the widht of the bottom you can now start working hdc around without increases to build the height of the bag. Otherwise just continue increasing in pattern. (That means making 3hdc into the first st and then the middle of the 3hdc-inc from the round before, so the marked stitch.)
Do turn your work at the start of each round while working the height until you are satisfied (I did about 24 rows), FO
White pouch/belly
ℹ️ we always sc into the first st and then sc inc into the second. Note that we ch1 and turn after every row.
If you want the patch to be bigger or smaller just add or subtract rows as needed.
Make a magic ring,
R1: 6sc into mr, ch1, turn your work without slst
R2: sc into first st, sc inc, (sc,sc inc) until the end
R3: sc, sc inc, (sc2, sc inc)×2, sc
R4: sc, sc inc, (sc3, sc inc)×2, sc2
R5: sc, sc inc, (sc4,sc inc)×2, sc3
R6: sc, sc inc, (sc5, sc inc)×2, sc4
R7-16: inc in pattern, adding one sc between each inc and making one less sc at the end than throughout. Your last row (aka R16) should be: sc, sc inc, (sc15, sc inc)×2, sc14
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
Now embroider the details onto the belly. (You can also do it after sewing, but it's the easiest to do it now).
I'd recommend to look up a picture for this part.
(For the embroidery I just took a long strand of gray yarn and used stitch markers to mark the placement of the "upside down v's". You can look up tutorials for basic embroidery if you don't know how to do it, but you'll for sure succeed!)
Place the semicircle on the bag and attach it with st marker to where you want to sew it, make sure the middle of the semicircle aligns with the middle of the bag.
If you want it to be a pocket, put a sm on each increase (the st more to the middle) at the top of the semicircle and align it with a st on the bag. That marks the width of your pocket opening, so don't sew in between the markers, when you get there.
Tip: you can also put the markers even if you don't want a pocket, just to make sure you're sewing straight
Now start sewing the bottom of the semicircle to the first row of the bag and continue going up - if you want it to be a pocket stop at the first sm we placed and cut the yarn. Reattach it on the second st marker and sew down until you reach the starting point aka first row of the bag/semicircle
If you don't want it to be a pocket you just sew all the way around
Strap
Make sure all strings are the same size, you may need more or less chains for the 2nd and 3rd string, depending on how long you make your string of leaves.
My straps were 107cm long.
I´d advice you to do the normal chains first and then the string of leaves, but I honestly did it the other way around.
Tip: you can also braid the strings together for a more sturdy strap. (either braid them loosely or tight)
ℹ️ One of my testers (@hookandhexes) made backpack style straps – for that just make two sets of straps that are a bit shorter and attach them to the sides (one end at the top and one at the bottom)
(String of leaves)
*Ch15, dc in 4th ch from hook, tre, picot (ch3, slst to first ch), tre, dc, ch3, slst to circle and the ch before that (basically the 12th and 11th chain from the base chain)* (ℹ️you can differ the ch amounts between the leaves, just always work into the 4th ch from hook)
(2nd & 3rd string)
Ch150, FO
Now just take all three string and knot them at the top and bottom. Use the ends to put attach the strap to the bag. For that I jus marked the middle of the bag on both sides and then put the ends though two side stitches. Then I made a knot and weaved in my ends to secure the strap.
Nose
Ch5, sc3, 3sc in last ch, sc2 on other side of chain, 2sc into the last ch, slst to first sc
ℹ️ if you want a bigger nose just make one more round of sc, but remember to put 3sc into the first st and the other side (where we increased the round before)
-> sew the nose above the middle of the belly pocket/patch
Eyes
• White (continues rounds)
R1: mr, sc6 (6)
R2: 6×inc (12)
R3: (sc,inc)×6 (18)
R4: (sc2, inc)×6, slst to first st and FO leaving a long tail for sewing (24)
If you want the eyes to be larger follow R5:
(R5: (sc3,inc)×6 (30))
•Black (continues rounds)
R1: mr, sc6 (6)
R2: 6×inc, FO leaving a long tail for sewing (12)
If you did R5 of the white part do R3 now:
(R3: (sc,inc) ×6 (18))
-> sew black part onto white part and then the eye onto the bag (you just need to sew the white part onto the bag)
Repeat the whole process for the second eye.
I used a stitch marker to mark the center above the nose and then counted 7 stitches to each side (not including the marked stitch)
(Optional) Ears
Note: one of my testers came up with the pattern for the ears and allowed me to include what she did in the pattern (@40yroldhooker)
ℹ️ You are going to make 2 pieces for each ear, that will then be sewn together. (4 pieces total)
R1: Ch2, sc in 2nd chain, ch1 and turn (1)
R2: sc inc×2 (4st total), ch1 and turn (4)
R3: sc inc, sc2, scinc, ch1 and turn (6)
R4: sc across, ch1 and turn (6)
Repeat row 4 until desired ear-height. Note down how many sc-rows you did.
Repeat the whole process for the other three pieces. Sew two pieces wrong side together to make one ear (then flip insideout). Repeat with the other two pieces.
Inside Pocket
Ch36, make 35hdc for 10 rows
Sew the pocket to the inside on the back of the bag. Remember to leave the top open, to make it a functional pocket.
Whiskers
I just used some black yarn and embroidered three lines on each side. I placed the middle line 14st away from the nose and right in the middle of it. Then I put one line above going up a bit and one line underneth the first one going down a bit.
(Optional) Back
You could either crochet a tail or add a pompom to the back. You could also make the bag reversible and repeat the process from the front for the back. I chose to not do either, but just leave the back plain.
Weave in your ends and you are done! 🎉
