The Basic Beret - Free Crochet Pattern

Hello everyooone, I'm happy to finally post the free pattern of the Basic Beret here on my blog! If you didn't already know, I also posted the complete pattern over on my Instagram (@crochet_witheli) in June'25 πŸ’–

Here are the three versions I made:
(Note: the pattern doesn't include add-ons, I just searched for tutorials on youtube)

Please don't hesitate to contact me over on Instagram if you need any help with the pattern or find a mistake πŸ₯°

The Beret has been tested by nine lovely people, of which you can see eight in the tester gallery at the end of my Instagram post and I highly recommend checking each of them out, since they are extremly talented 🀭 You can just click any of the two links below πŸ₯°

So let's get into the pattern, should we? 🀭πŸ₯°

🟑 First of all here are the stitches and abbreviations you need to know (US TERMS) - I won't be teaching them in this pattern, but you can find all of the techniques on Youtube.

-magic ring (mr)
-chain (ch)
-double crochet (dc)
-single crochet (sc)
-increase (inc; 2double crochet in one stitch)
-decrease (sc-dec/dc-dec)
-slip stitch (slst)
-Fasten off (FO)

🟑 Let's move on to the materials I used:

Note: you can use any yarn and hook size- there is a gauge to meet, but you can adjust the pattern with additional rounds if needed

-3mm hook
(My tension is very loose, most of my testers used a 4-5.5 mm hook-> tip: go to the lookbook at the end to see which hook & yarn size each of my testers used)
-weight 2/fine yarn in one or two colors -> I needed 50g of the black and about 10g of the lilac) -> specifally I used Friends Cotton 8/6 by Hobbii
-tapestry needle to weave in ends
-scissors

🟑 Notes on how to read the pattern

-The pattern is written in joined rounds, you will always slst to the first dc/sc of the round (not the ch2/ch1)

-The ch2/ch1 at the beginning does NOT count as a stitch.

-Instructions in the () are repeated sequences.

-The () at the end indicates the stitch count.

- There's an option for extra rounds to meet gauge (see next page for gauge swatch) -> the extra rounds are written in () and labeled as Round 8.1 and Round 9.1 (add more extra rows in pattern if needed, but remember to also add the same amount of decrease rows in that case)

🟑 The Gauge Swatch
I'd highly advice you to make a swatch before starting the project, to figure out if the size of hook you chose works for your tension!

Round 1: make a magic ring and ch2, proceed to make 12dc in the center, close the mr and slst to the first dc (not the ch2) (12)
Round 2: ch2, inc in every stitch around, slst to first dc (24)
Round 3: ch2, (dc, inc) ×12 , slst (36)
Round 4: ch2, (2dc, inc) × 12, slst (48)

->Your work should measure around 5in at this point.
Continue to Round 5 of the pattern on the next page, if your gauge is correct.

->If your gauge doesn't match, size up (or down) your hook accordingly,
until you reach the measurement!
There's also the option to add additional rows if you can't seem to meet gauge.
The pattern on my Instagram I wrote out one set of extra rows, but you can add as many as needed (just inc &dec in pattern)
Some testers needed up to 3 sets of extra rounds.

🟑 Now onto the actual pattern!

Round 5: ch2, (3dc, inc) ×12, slst (60)
Round 6: ch2, 2dc, inc, (4dc,inc) × 11, 2dc, slst (72)
Round 7: ch2, (5dc, inc) ×12, slst (84)
Round 8: ch2, 3dc, inc, (6dc, inc)×11, 3dc, slst (96)
(Round 8.1: ch2, (7dc, inc) × 12 (108) )

β„Ή️ After Round 8 my circle measured about 10in! Make sure to measure your piece to ensure the right fit!
If it doesn't match, you can add an additional round of inc and dec!
You can add even more rounds if needed, just inc in pattern, then continue with row 9 before decreasing the same amount of rounds you increased

Round 9: ch2, dc around, slst (96); (108, if you did the extra round)
(Round 9.1: ch2, (7dc, dc-dec) × 12 (96)
Round 10: ch2, 3dc, dc-dec, (6dc, dc-dec) × 11, 3dc, slst (84)
Round 11: ch2, (5dc, dc-dec) × 12, slst (72)
Round 12: ch2, 2dc, dc-dec, (4dc, dc-dec) × 11, 2dc, slst (60)
Round 13: ch 1, (3sc, sc-dec)×12, slst (48)
(Optional: Change colour for Round 14/the brim)
Round 14: ch1, sc around, slst (48)
Round 15: ch1, sc around, FO, slst (48)
